Services, Training, and Pricing
How much does it cost to become a Private Pilot?
Private Pilot training consists of at least 40 hours of flight time, 20 of which must be flight instruction from an instructor. All in, a Private Pilot Certificate with the fee for a checkride (~2-hour flight and ~$1,000 for an examiner) comes in around $10,000 however, most people end up paying around $12,000-$15,000 because of additional training. Private Pilot training can be reduced in price in a small plane such as the Cessna 152, however, most people elect to use a larger plane such as the Cessna 172, or Piper Cherokee (PA-28), both planes that are commonly used for instrument training and commercial training.
How much is an Instrument Rating?
The Instrument Rating is a Pilot's best friend. Allowing you to fly in less-than-ideal weather the IR will enable you to fly more often. Furthermore, the training for the IR greatly improves one's piloting abilities. One of the leading causes of fatal accidents with General Aviation pilots is the non-instrument-rated private pilot flying into low visibility/low cloud ceilings and becoming disoriented. During instrument training you will learn how to safely fly the airplane without seeing outside the cockpit, making it much harder to become disoriented, improving safety. The minimum hours for an IR consist of 50 hours XC PIC and 40 hours of simulated instrument or actual instrument flight time. The total cost with checkride fees and an examiner is between $10,000 and $15,000.
Do You Own an Airplane?
The estimates for private pilot and instrument ratings assume you will rent an aircraft for instruction. In your airplane, the prices will be significantly lower as you will not be paying $120-$200 an hour for a rental. Additionally, the rates shown below DO NOT INCLUDE plane rental fees. Flight training given in your airplane or an airplane that you are supplying will only cost $40/hour for the flight training. If you are not able to supply the airplane the additional rental fee will be added to your flight instruction fee. This allows you to decide which model airplane you would like flight training to be provided in.
